Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum participation requirement?
Carriers typically require a minimum percentage of eligible employees to enroll, often around 70%, and some require a minimum number of enrolled employees. Employees with other qualifying coverage can usually be excluded from the count. Requirements vary by carrier.
How much must the employer contribute?
Carriers generally require the employer to pay a minimum share of employee-only premium, commonly 50%. The exact rule depends on the carrier and plan.
When should we start the renewal process?
Ideally 90 to 120 days before your renewal date, so there is time to review options and meet enrollment deadlines.
How many employees qualify as small group in California?
California defines small group as 1 to 100 eligible employees. Owners with at least one W-2 employee other than a spouse can often qualify.
What does a broker cost the employer?
In most cases carrier commissions are built into the premium, so the employer does not pay a separate broker fee. Premiums are the same whether you use a broker or not for most fully insured plans.
Can we switch carriers mid-year?
Group coverage can generally be moved at renewal or when a carrier allows a new effective date. We will review timing and any penalties before recommending a change.
